They were prevented from visiting the unmarked graves of their loved ones\u2014victims from the 1980s, specifically political prisoners massacred in the summer of 1988.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The families stated that security agents demanded identification cards before allowing entry into the cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the authorities blocking the families from visiting the graves of their loved ones, a group continues to gather every Friday outside the closed gates of Khavaran. There, they honor the memory of the executed political prisoners by displaying their photographs and singing songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past decades, the families of the victims have striven to preserve this site and ensure free access to it. To date, the Islamic Republic has refused to provide information regarding the burial locations or the identities of those executed in the summer of 1988. During the early 1980s\u2014and most notably in the summer of 1988\u2014thousands of political prisoners were executed in Iranian prisons and buried in mass graves sceretly. Decades later, the families continue their efforts to seek justice and hold the Islamic Republic accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
