The Islamic Republic has committed a crime again.

The Islamic Republic has committed a crime again.

Bektash Abtin, a poet, filmmaker, and prominent member of the Iranian Writers’ Association, died on January 8, 2021, at Sasan Hospital in Tehran due to coronavirus.

The Islamic Republic sentenced Bektash Abtin to six years in prison for his membership in the Iranian Writers’ Association and his presence at the graves of those killed in a series of political assassinations, and he was imprisoned in Evin Prison since October 25, 2020, at the height of the coronavirus crisis. He contracted the virus in prison and died a few days after being transferred to the hospital.

Coronavirus has spread rapidly in the prisons of the Islamic Republic and is threatening the lives of hundreds of political prisoners. The Islamic Republic is deliberately not taking protective and health measures to reduce the spread of the virus among political prisoners and is failing to transfer infected prisoners to the hospital in a timely manner. The Islamic Republic is responsible for the lives of political prisoners and, in the event of their death, is responsible for their death.

The Iranian Political Prisoners Association (in exile), while offering condolences to Abtin’s family and his fellow activists in the Iranian Writers Association, holds the Islamic Republic directly responsible for the death of this freedom-loving and anti-authoritarian poet.
