A Voice Cannot Be Executed
The Islamic Republic knows it cannot execute Toomaj, though it has sent countless others like him to their deaths during its 45 years of bloody rule. However, it could not silence their voice of freedom that has resonated throughout society, spoken by the majority, and strikes like a hammer on the heads of this criminal regime. Toomaj is a big bite for the Islamic regime and it does not dare to touch him, at least for time being.
The issuance of the death sentence for Toomaj was met with an immediate wave of widespread domestic and international protests. The regime quickly retreated, with the judiciary announcing that Toomaj’s sentence was preliminary, leaving room for the Supreme Court to overturn it. Nevertheless, until this medieval sentence is overturned and Toomaj is released from prison, his life remains in danger, and the struggle to save him must continue.
Iranian society has grown highly sensitive to death penalty, particularly political executions carried out by the Islamic Republic, and reacts swiftly to such events. Public solidarity against the regime’s repressive actions is unparalleled. Consequently, the Islamic Republic has recently carried out many political executions in secrecy.
The lives of more than ten political prisoners sentenced to death, including Reza Rasaei, Abbas (Mojahid), Korkor, Abbas Dris, Mehran Bahramian, Fazel Bahramian, Farshid Hassan Zehi, Mansour Dahmarde, and others, are at risk. If we remain complacent, the Islamic Republic will execute them covertly.
Execution is a state-sanctioned murder, a criminal and inhumane act, and must be abolished. Toomaj Salehi and all political prisoners must be released unconditionally.
