The Islamic Republic Secretly Executes Political Prisoners Amidst the Fury of War

The criminal regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran secretly executed two political prisoners, Mohammad Masoumshahi and Hamed Validi, in Karaj Prison on Monday 21 April 2026, on charges of “membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran” and “spying for Israel.”

The Islamic Republic, which lacks the ability to identify agents of the Israeli intelligence and espionage services who have infiltrated the highest levels of Iranian regime, accuses political prisoners of espionage in order to show that it is in control of the situation.

The Islamic Republic of Iran also sentenced these two political prisoners to death behind closed doors and in a deeply unfair trial process, and secretly murdered them without the knowledge of their lawyers and families.

The Islamic Republic has sentenced dozens of political prisoners to death, especially a number of protesters who were arrested during the protests in January 2025, including Farzad Moradi, Saghar Gholami, Mohammadreza Majidi-Asl, Bita Hemmati, Behrouz Zamani-Nejad, and Kourosh Zamani-Nejad. The risk of execution threatens these freedom loving young people at any moment.

The chronological sequence of recent executions shows that not only has the number of executions increased, but the time interval between executions has also decreased, and has accelerated under the shelter of war. We must speak out more loudly against executions, repression, and killings, and call on the progressive forces of our countries of residence, as well as global human rights defenders, to pressure the criminal regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran to cancel the death sentences issued in Iran.

The Iranian Political Prisoners Association (in exile) strongly condemns the executions of Mohammad Masoomshahi and Hamed Validi. Executions in any forms are state/government murders and must be stopped.
